Hi, all,
I'm Rachael's mom, and am making a concerted effort to improve my communications with other families for this trip. Our family has had 3 previous trips with The Traveling School. Rachael went to South America Spring '07 and her sister, Erin, went to Southern Africa Fall '06 and New Zealand Fall of '05. I'm *notoriously* bad about communicating by e-mail or bloggers. Feel free to nudge me if you'd like any info regarding our previous experiences and I will try to oblige and overcome my natural dislike of keyboards. Truly, I'm not quite as curmudgeonly in person...I don't think!?
I heard from Rachael this morning and she is in good spirits anticipating the days ahead. Her sister, Erin, is very jealous and dying to relive with her the people and location that she came to know and love on her trip. I have a feeling Rachael will be using her phone opportunities to call Erin at college, rather than us :-(. Rachael said that the scenery is somewhat like eastern Montana, though with a few more mountains.
Have a good day dreaming of the girls' first days in their adventure.

It was so nice to hear from an experienced mother. It was a very emotional experience leaving Brielle as the airport, even though I know that she will have an amazing experience. Unfortunately, I only heard from her through a voice message on my cell phone. I was so upset that I missed talking to her. She sounded very happy! I can't wait to talk to her and hear about all the great girls she will be spending the next few months with, as well as the great things they are doing. I find myself constantly thinking of what she is doing, while I am attempting to stay focused at work. I am a guidance counselor at a middle school and with the first few days of school, they have helped me to not think about Brielle as much.
Keep in touch.
I know what you mean...I had very few calls from Rachael last year and was a bit disappointed she did not seem to miss us more:-). But then again, I was happy she was relishing the experience without any distractions. I think it is obviously much harder on the parents than the girls. I was one of those parents that did not want my girls to even go on school-sponsored trips because I wanted to enjoy each moment with them that I could until they left for college. Hmmm...see how far that attitude got me!
However, every girl reacts differently and some girls are very homesick for the first few weeks and some are not. And some of the ones that are very homesick are the first to want to sign up for another semester...
